We began our 2016-2017 Curriculum Year this past month and it is off to a great start!
Our annual Benefactors Dinner at the beginning of November was a wonderful evening of food, fellowship, and a magnificent lecture by Fr. Paul Scalia. We livestreamed in a group of devoted ICC followers from Alaska who get together monthly to watch ICC lectures and discuss the Catholic Faith. We also streamed in religious sisters from Russia! It was great to meet so many supporters of the Institute and thank them for helping us in our mission to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
Our Fall 2016 Quarter kicked off with an enlightening talk by Robert Reilly based on a book by the philosopher Josef Pieper. In Divine Madness: Plato Against Secular Humanism, Reilly explored the concept of theia mania (divine madness) in Plato and how it is taken up in Christian thought to describe the union with God reached by the saints.
On the Feast of Christ the King, Dr. Timothy O’Donnell, president of Christendom College, beautifully explained the history and importance of the feast day, showing its relation to that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and how this feast can help to transform our contemporary society for Christ in Christ the King: Christus Vincit, Christus Regnat, Christus Imperat.
After a nice Thanksgiving reprieve, we kicked off the Advent Season with the first of our Advent lectures, God of Gods: Julius Caesar & the Advent of Christ by Dr. Brendan McGuire. He provided a rousing history of the Roman Empire and the different emperors/wars/political intrigues that led to making it the prime place for the Incarnation and the spreading of the Gospel throughout the world.
Be sure to join us in December as we continue our Advent preparation with House of Bread: Israel & the Advent of the Messiah with Dr. John Bergsma, Our Lady of Guadalupe & the Conquest of Darkness with Christopher Check, Behold the Glory: Christ, the Temple of God with Daniel Garland, and Veni, Dilecte Mi: Preparing for Christmas with the Song of Songs with Msgr. Charles Pope and a special choral performance from Chorus Sine Nomine.
With the Advent Season, we have also begun our Christmas Fundraising Drive! The education that the Institute of Catholic Culture provides is 100% FREE – and we intend to keep it that way. Yet, it is not free to provide this education. We have to pay for our excellent speakers, website hosting and maintenance, advertising, and many other expenses to ensure that we provide the best quality education in the Catholic Faith to all who hunger and thirst for the Truth of Jesus Christ. Please prayerfully consider helping us in our mission to bring the Catholic Faith and culture to as many souls as possible. You can make your tax-deductible donation by clicking here.
Until next month, may God richly bless you!
